At the end of the application is the prompt for Reflection 1. Please complete your reflection and submit it with this form to the CEM Coordinator Barbara Juhasz (bjuhasz@wesleyan.edu). Name:Date:Wes ID number:Class year:E-mail:Major(s):REQUIREMENT 1- COURSEWORK Completion of the CEM requires six courses selected from at least THREE of the six categories and one must be from The Practice of Democracy category. The Individual in Society The Practice of Democracy Ethical Reasoning Volunteerism and Activism Education and Public Scholarship Civic engagement in Cross-Cultural Perspective Courses that are not on the official list or that are taken during study abroad may be counted towards the CEM by petition to the CEM advisory panel. Please list any courses that you have taken so far that count for the CEM. CourseCategory Semester & Year 1.2.3.4.5.6. REQUIREMENT 2- COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT/VOLUNTEERISM The CEM requires a minimum of forty hours of volunteer work in the local community. This work is often coordinated through the Jewett Center for Community Partnerships student-led groups. This work can be done through short efforts over the course of a semester or through extended volunteer experience. Please note that while service work does not provide academic credit, it is essential if students are to acquire an understanding of what is involved in sustaining the practices of civil society and what is required to change existing social practices. You will write a Critical Reflection on your experiences and complete the Community Engagement Documentation Form. Please see the list of JCCP volunteer programs HYPERLINK "/jccp/get-involved/volunteer.html"/jccp/get-involved/volunteer.html QUESTION- Have you volunteered with a student group at 911 before? If so, which group and approximately how many hours have you completed thus far? REQUIREMENT 3- PRACTICUM By a practicum we mean an activity in the community such as an internship (but not confined to formal internships) that has a substantial civic engagement component, is sufficiently experiential, and contains a structured reflection on the experience in the form of readings and writing projects. The Practicum must be taken for credit, and students are strongly encouraged to receive credit through CSPL 493, which grants a .25 internship credit. The Practicum may also take the form of a tutorial, an independent study, or as Education in the Field approved by the CEM advisory panel. Certain courses can also count as the Practicum (e.g. CSPL 120, CSPL 290/291) Contact Barbara Juhasz to discuss your practicum options. You will complete a Critical Reflection on your experiences. REQUIREMENT 4- THREE CRITICAL REFLECTIONS Students will write and submit reflection pieces at the beginning, middle, and end of the minor process. The first reflection should be submitted with the application (please see the next page for the first reflection prompt. REQUIREMENT 5- SENIOR CAPSTONE SEMINAR Students take CSPL 302- Senior Seminar for the Civic Engagement Minor in the Fall semester of their senior year. This .25 credit course provides seniors with the opportunity to reflect on their pathway through the minor and develop a capstone paper and presentation related to their interests in civic engagement. REFLECTION 1 PROMPT Reflection 1 should focus on the question of why you want to pursue the Civic Engagement Minor. What does civic engagement mean to you? You can discuss any past experiences, volunteer work, or courses that are relevant to answering this question. Length is 500-1000 words. Please include your reflection below.
